Soil and Climate Requirement For Ginger

After the selection of varieties, you have to see favourable soil and climate conditions for ginger farming. For ginger farming, you should require a warm and humid climate.

Ginger is a tropical crop that requires tropical climate conditions to grow. This plant is efficiently grown in cool and dry climate conditions, providing the plant’s right growth. Ginger farming requires an ample amount of moisture for better development and growth. It is a shade-loving crop that needs optimum rainfall approx 150-300 cm throughout the growing period. Dry weather with a temperature of 280 to 350C is required for a month before harvesting.

For ginger farming, well-drained soils such as red loam or lateritic loam, sandy or clay loam is perfect, providing well-growth of the crop. A friable loam is the best soil as it is enriched with hummus. As a complete crop, it requires a full fertility soil to grow.

Select Site & Prepare It

In the third step, you should select a ginger cultivation site with no history of diseases and pests. Prepare this site with the receipt of early summer showers after soil analysis. The land should be dug well 4 to 5 times to fine-tune the soil and remove weeds, stalks, roots etc. It is appropriate to grow in bed if ginger is cultivated as a rain-fed crop.

Seed Rate

In the fourth step, spread the seeds after checking their rates. Approx 1200 – 1500 kg of ginger seeds are essential for planting in the one-hectare area. Select ginger seed as a planting material that should be free from diseases and pests.

Planting

After all the above process, now it’s time to plant the ginger crop. The middle of April is a perfect time for ginger farming. The duration of ginger planting is from April to May. Ginger is constantly promoted by parts of the rhizome, known as seed rhizome. With care, cut the seed rhizomes into small pieces of 2.5 – 5.0 cm, which have a length weighing 20-25 g and one or two good buds each.

Treat the seed with 0.3 % Dithane M 45 for 30 min as it avoids the crops from diseases and pests, helping in early germination. Before planting, dip the rhizomes seed in cow urine for half an hour to get better results. Plant the grain at a 20-25 cm spacing with the rows and 20-25 cm between the rows.

Manure and Fertilizers

It’s now time to protect the planting seed, providing better and developed ginger. To protect the crop during the planting:

  1. Apply compost and manure at the 25-30 tonnes per hectare rate with 50 kg P2O5 and 25 kg K2O and 2-tonnes neem cake.
  2. Apply manure and fertilizers by broadcasting on beds before planting or in pits at the time of planting.
  3. For ginger farming, apply 75 kg nitrogen per hectare in two equal doses at 40 or 90 days after the planting process.

Mulching

In the seventh step, start mulching the beds with green leaves, essential operations for ginger. Mulching a good source of organic manure and prevents washing of soil, conserves soil moisture, smoothers weed growth, and improves the soil’s physical properties as well. The first mulching is done during the planting with 12.5 tonnes of green leaves, and the second is after the 40th day and 90th day with 5 tonnes of green leaves per hectare.

Harvesting

Now it’s time to last process harvesting and curing. Harvesting is done from six months onwards to produce green ginger. The ginger is washed with water 2-3 times to remove the soil and dirt. Harvest the crop between 245 to 260 days to prepare dry ginger. When the leaves change in yellow and start gradually drying up, lift clumps carefully with a spade and digging fork and remove the soil. The average production of ginger varies from 15 to 25 tonnes per ha.
